The Research and Cure for Huntington and Rare Diseases Unit will be leaded by prof Ferdinando Squitieri who left the Neurological Research Institute Neuromed in Pozzilli (IS), where he has been leading the Neurogenetics and Rare Diseases Unit for many years.
Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza Foundation is a Research Institute - founded by San Pio da Pietrelcina - with a strong expertise on hereditary genetic diseases . By launching the HD Unit, the Foundation intends to strenghten the Italian contribution to Huntington Disease research progress.
Neurological and Psichiatric assistance, genetic testing and genetic councelling, laboratory, clinical and translational research will be managed by the Unit.
"To me, accepting to lead this Research and Cure on HD and Rare Diseases Unit in such a prestigious Institution is an honour", Prof Squitieri said. "I thank very much the scientific director and the general manager of Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza Foundation for offering me to face this challenge. HD patiens and families will have at their disposal the first HD fully focused Unit within a Research Institute".
The HD Unit will be operative in Rome, at CSS Mendel Institute - which is part of Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza Foundation - located in Viale Regina Margherita 261, starting from July 2015.
